It is our great pleasure to introduce Professor Don Kurtz as our guest astronomer on our Arctic Explorer tour this February, 2017. During the trip Don will be delivering on board lectures on a selection of fascinating subjects, plus he will be leading our quests for the natural phenomenon that is the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
Born in San Diego, California, to an American father and Canadian mother. He obtained his PhD in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976, then spent 24 years in South Africa at the University of Cape Town, where he was Professor and Life Fellow. At present, Don has been Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Central Lancashire since 2001.
He is a Vice-President of the Royal Astronomical Society and observes with some of the largest telescopes in the world. Just one of his incredible achievements includes the discovery of a class of pulsating, magnetic stars that are the most peculiar stars known!
Throughout our Russian and Norwegian Arctic adventure, Don will be documenting our time spent in search of the Aurora Borealis, with the help of live space weather predictions, so stay tuned for his post-trip diary! If you missed out on this departure, we still have a couple of cabins remaining for our New Year Arctic Explorer tour on December 29. Please contact us for details.
