Day 4 Furka Pass

Today we cross one of the most beautiful mountain passes in the world, the Furka Pass.

The Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke (Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway) is a largely volunteer operated heritage railway which operates a partially rack and pinion-operated line across the Furka Pass. Culminating at 2,160 metres (7,086 feet) above sea level, it is an old mountainous section of the Furka Oberalp Bahn (FOB) that was abandoned after the construction of the tunnel that made it obsolete.

The Furka Pass has been gradually brought back into service by the Verein Furka-Bergstrecke with the use of the original, historical equipment restored to its former glory, with the entire line completed in 2010. The 100-year-old steam locomotive will take one hour to climb to the summit up a gradient of 1 in 81⁄2 (11.8%) where a traditional Swiss BBQ lunch of Bratwürste will be taken.

We then descend under the Rhône glacier to Oberalp where we join the modern Glacier Express to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn.
