How does the train deal with the extreme altitude?
As the railway ascends into the clouds, the air naturally thins and oxygen levels drop. To ensure our guests’ absolute comfort, the trains operating on this high-altitude route are specially designed with pressurized carriages and oxygen-enriched cabins. This thoughtful luxury allows you to recline in comfort, luxuriating in the details of the journey while observing the dramatic shifts from sweeping grasslands to shimmering salt lakes, entirely undisturbed by the high elevation.
How was the railway built over permafrost?
Nearly half of the route crosses delicate, high-altitude permafrost that freezes and thaws with the seasons. To prevent the track from shifting, engineers implemented ingenious passive cooling techniques. By utilizing crushed rock embankments to minimize heat transfer and installing thermosyphons (metal heat pipes) deep into the earth, the permafrost remains safely frozen. This monumental effort not only stabilizes the railway but respectfully protects the fragile alpine ecosystem beneath it.
Ascending to the Roof of the World
Following an immersive exploration of China’s ancient heartlands aboard the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express, guests transition to this high-altitude railway in Xining.
